I’m excited to announce a fun and worthwhile challenge! I will be attempting to …. (drumroll, please) ….
knit a sweater in ONE day!
As part of the Alzheimer’s Association’s “The Longest Day” fundraiser, I will be knitting to show my support for all those affected by or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. For families facing dementia, every day can feel like the longest day – so doing the what I love most from sunrise to sunset is surely the least I can do!
Because the actual longest day of the year (June 21) is on a Thursday, I will be holding my challenge on Friday, June 22 simply because it’s an easier day for me (and others) to take off work, also because……. (cue another drumroll) …… my very favorite local yarn shop – The Perfect Blend Yarn and Tea – has agreed to host the event at their shop so other knitters can join!
Originally, I announced in my podcast that I would hold the event on Saturday (so I wouldn’t have to take off work at all), but once Perfect Blend so graciously got on board, Friday the 22nd just worked out better. By coincidence, I have to come into work that Sunday, which is helping me to feel a little less guilty about missing work.
Here are all the important details so far:
Knit Along with Me on June 22nd!
Mary – the owner of Perfect Blend – has so very kindly agreed to open her shop doors at sunrise and then stay open until sunset, so that other fiber folk may come in and knit or crochet along and also contribute to a group knitting project. If you are in the Saugerties, NY area – I do hope you’ll stop in Perfect Blend that day! Perfect Blend will have a knit / crochet relay going on that day and will donate $5 for every foot of fabric created on some fun collaborative projects! Come by and knit a few rows!
If You Can’t Make it to Perfect Blend…
Since not everyone is lucky enough to live just blocks away from Perfect Blend, and I know not everyone knits or crochets, I hope that you will spend a little time “making” that day, using any medium of your choice. Feel free to join the Facebook event for the virtual “make-a-thon” where you can share your craft with others involved. If you post a photo of your project on social media, please tag me and use #LDmakeathon so everyone can see your work!
Make a Difference Today for Generations of Tomorrow!
I am also hoping to raise $3,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association by sunset on June 22, and I’m so pleased to say I’m already about 25% there, thanks to kind and caring friends and family! If you would like to make a contribution, please make a gift on my donation page, where you can also read about how dementia has affected my family. Thank you for helping to ensure that future generations will not have to face this terrible disease!
I’ll continue to update with info as the event gets closer! I’m so excited about this special day and I’m even more pleased that others will be joining me along the way 🙂
